When I first started hearing from God (or maybe I just started listening) I didn’t know what to believe and there is one thing for sure, I did not think that God loved me. I explored many websites and found out that there was no easy answer, no quick fix, no concensus amongst the church and an array of messages ranging from “God hates Fags” to extremely liberal messages that God affirms and accepts homosexual behaviour, or “it’s not a sin and Jesus never mentioned it so therefore it’s not a problem!” Some churches said it was OK to be actively gay and be a Christian, others said it was not acceptable and still others would not actively welcome a gay person into their congregation.
What a minefield. Clearly it took me a long time to work my way through all the mixed messages to come up with my beliefs which I hold solidly today and the only way I got through it all was with God’s help.
So I firmly believe that:
God loves me, he loved me while I was still a sinner and before I gave my life to him as much as he loves me now- Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us . So I am not, nor have I ever been separated from God’s love, his love is freely given to all and nobody is unloved by God.
The Bible is God’s word – 2 Timothy 3:16 – All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. As such I believe that each of us need to review God’s word as it relates to our lives, to be comfortable with our life decisions based on an understanding of God’s word.
We are called to obedience – John 14:23 – Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. So I see that through obedience to God we will receive him fully and be saved and this can only happen through being obedient to his word and commands.
The Bible clearly shows both directly and indirectly that practising homosexuality is a sin for both men and women and that those who continue to actively engage in this lifestyle are being disobedient to God’s will – Romans 1:26-27 – Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men (this is just one reference in the Bible there are others in both the Old and New Testament). This is a difficult passage to digest at first I admit because it fundamentally challenges our lifestyle, but one which I believe must be considered in light of points 2 and 3 above
We are called to speak truth and love to all – Ephesians 4:15 – Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. So through embracing truth and love we are not overly judgemental nor overly permissive but we reflect the love of our God and Saviour and I believe it is our calling to ensure our brothers and sisters who are struggling with same sex attraction have opportunities to talk about and explore their faith in a loving, supported, God centred environment.
I have included below direct Bible references to homosexuality (please note as it says on the “Bible Study Tools website) God’s timeless Word reveals His plan for humanity and His intentions for marriage and sexuality. While Scripture teaches that homosexual acts are sinful, these Bible verses aren’t about condemning homosexuals, gays, lesbians, or transgender people. Rather, read God’s loving warning and offer of grace for those who have strayed from His will for sex. We live in a fallen world with a fallen nature, but in Christ, we can be new creations.
Romans 1: 26-28 – Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.
1 Timothy 1: 8-11 – We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.
1 Corinthians 7:2 – But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband
1 Corinthians 6: 9-11 – Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Leviticus 18:22 – Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable
Leviticus 20:13 – If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable
