In my short Christian life I have already lost count of the number of times I have heard or read “but Jesus never said anything about homosexuality”.
I kind of see this as being used in two different ways:
- By Gay “Christians” who are seeking to justify their stance by focusing on the lack of a direct commandment from Jesus.
- By church goers/Christians seeking to be supportive of the gay community, those whose lives do not depend on a true understanding of God’s word, who pick this up as a quick and easy affirmation that it must be OK.
So yes, there is no record of Jesus saying that homosexuality is a sin, but can we then make an assumption which cannot be substantiated i.e. that it’s not a sin? A lack of direct reference for me does not mean that Jesus said it was OK.
I also see that Jesus was knowledgeable of the Old Testament, clearly aware of it’s teachings. He even spoke about Sodom in Luke 17:28 – 29 showing his full awareness of the sins of that town. Jesus was aware, he spoke of Sodom not to say it was a mistake, not to say God has changed his mind but to illustrate what it will be like in the last days. I think that speaks volumes….
It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulphur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.
Now there is one thing that is clear, without any need for speculation and that is what Jesus taught about marriage:
Matthew 19: 3-6 – Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?’ ‘Haven’t you read,’ he replied, ‘that at the beginning the Creator “made them male and female,” and said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh”? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.’
This verse reaffirms Genesis 2:23-24 which states:
The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called “woman”, for she was taken out of man.’ That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
I take this as irrefutable evidence that we were created as male and female to procreate, Jesus clearly states that God made male and female and the two will become one flesh. This is as clear as it can be for me. So, no Jesus didn’t directly say homosexuality is a sin but he does clearly state God’s design for man and woman, his plan for human sexuality and doesn’t that just serve to reinforce all the teaching elsewhere in the Bible?
